Supermotard is an exciting type of motorcycle sport conducted on circuits of between 800 and 1700 metres’ length. The circuit consists of a bitumen section and a dirt section. The ratio of sealed surface to dirt usually varies between 70-30 and 80-20. The dirt section may also have small jumps in it but it's basically a smooth surface. This discipline can be conducted on road race tracks. The machines used are the 'off road' dirt bikes or motocross bikes that usually have 'road bike' type wheels and brakes fitted and have had their suspension lowered. The races are short and exciting with the emphasis on heavy braking at tight corners to make the rider 'back it in' - which is the terminology for a big slide prior to the corner. Road race clothing is required and the tyres used are usually hand grooved slicks. |
