HART AND THE ADF TEAM UP
The Minister of Defence released a national Defence safety campaign last
November to encourage Defence’s motorcycle riders to refresh their
riding
skills.
Defence recognises that its people are its most important asset. With
the
Minister a keen motorcycle rider himself, the Defence Motorcycle Safety
and Awareness campaign was introduced to reduce the number of crashes
involving Defence’s motorcycle riders.
LT COL Simon Warne from the ADF Defence Materiel Organisation, who has
organised three training courses on behalf of his colleagues at Honda
Australia Rider Training’s (HART) Tullamarine Centre, had this to say
about the Safety Campaign.
“HART provides training in Melbourne and Australia wide, and has
provided
training to over 40 Melbourne ADF Members since the campaign began,
giving
riders a unique blend of humour with practical skills.”
“Rob is the Senior Instructor, and has been involved all year in keeping
riders focused with his broad range of poor jokes and great teaching
style. All the HART instructors encourage students to extend their
skills.
Their aim is to allow riders to explore their abilities in a safe
learning
environment, and all the Defence riders have left the course with huge
smiles and a healthy respect for our chosen sport.”
“The worth of the courses has been proven already; some of the riders
have
experienced situations that would have seen them involved in an
accident.
The skills they learnt have paid dividends in preventing a situation
where
Defence stands to lose the services of an employee while they recover
from
injuries. An added bonus is they become better car drivers – all from a
day spent enjoying riding and learning new skills.”
Since 2006, HART has trained over 1,500 post licensed riders through
Safety Workshops, Advanced and RoadSkills Courses nationally.
Of those riders, 289 have been Defence Force members from five states
including Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland Western and South
Australia. Training will be held in the Northern Territory at Katherine
and Darwin in September 2007.
